Help Feed Hungry Americans

40 million people in the U.S. are food insecure. That's one in eight Americans who don't know where their next meal is coming from. Meanwhile, the EPA estimates that America wastes 68 billion pounds of food each year. Nearly 85% of food waste in the U.S. is created in homes and consumer-facing businesses, where individuals can have a direct impact. Recovering just one-third of that food before it goes to waste would be enough to feed all 40 million food insecure Americans.

GreaterGood.org partners with Food Recovery Network to help stop food waste and feed hungry people. Food Recovery Network unites college students to recover perishable food that would otherwise go to waste from their campus dining halls or local restaurants. Then, students deliver this food directly to shelters, food banks, and churches—serving those who need it most.

"I so appreciate the help during this transition and crisis. I felt part of a family in so many ways. This did indeed include the daily meals, conversations and kindness of residents and staff. I am so appreciative. I now know how good fish tacos are! All the kindnesses mean so much!" — Mrs. K.G., a female veteran who recently received meals through FRN

You can help! Your donation will ensure hungry Americans will have a meal when they need it most.

Updates from the Field

March 2019

Together, YOUR donations have helped feed thousands of hungry people! Last year, the Food Recovery Network's food donations saved shelter and food bank partners an average of $7,000 per year—equivalent to an $8,000 market value in food product! These cost savings allow organizations to reallocate funding to other essential services, including housing, healthcare, and educational resources. Moreover, many partners report that they are able to offer their clients a greater variety of healthy food as a result of FRN’s food donations.

“During the week, our food is supplied by a catering company … and sometimes residents wish for more variety. Not so on the weekends. With the rescued food from Towson University, the residents have options they might not have during the week - delicious sandwiches, salads, yogurt as well as pastries. In short, the rescued food from Towson University brightens the day for many of our residents.” — Food Bank Staff Member, Baltimore

Food Recovery Network Student Volunteers

The student volunteers provide more than just food. They bring a sense of community to those they serve. Thanks to YOUR support, these students volunteers have been supported with the resources they need to stop food waste and feed people who might otherwise go hungry. Thank you!

"Our folks enjoy the food very much, and are deeply touched. The students are also remarkable, engaging with our folks and staff, and adding a valuable presence to our programs. Individuals in our programs often eat alone. This food is the center of a 'community' that is building and working to provide a safe place for people to gather and share." — Lyle Beckman, a Director at Night Ministry, a FRN partner agency

July 2018

So far this year, the Food Recovery Network has recovered 862,513 pounds of food! This couldn't have been possible without your help! When you contribute to recover food from being wasted, you decrease the number of people that go to bed with an empty stomach, while also reducing the harmful impact on the environment caused by food waste. Your donations help hungry people and the planet at the same time!

Food Recovery Network (FRN) unites students at colleges and universities nationwide to fight food waste and hunger by recovering perishable food that would otherwise go to waste from their campuses and surrounding communities and donating it to people in need.
